Nevada Department of Transportation

In Nevada, the Nevada Department of Transportation (“NDOT”) is the state agency that provides a better transportation system for Nevada through their unified and dedicated efforts.  The NDOT is responsible for the planning, construction, operation, and maintenance of the 5,400 miles of highway and over 1,000 bridges which make up the state highway system. The NDOT is divided into three districts, with a district engineer and assistant engineers in each.  The following are the main three districts: Las Vegas, Reno, and Elko.

The aforementioned districts are responsible for supervising all state transportation activities within their local areas.  The NDOT is headquarterd at Carson City.  The NDOT is overseen by a seven-member Board of Directors and directed by Senior Staff.

The NDOT provides an integration of travel by rail, bike, air, or bus.   The NDOT also oversees various allied projects program.  It also provides maintenance of State Historical Markers.

The following are the goals of the NDOT:

  • To be in touch with and responsive to the customers;
  • To provide innovative ideas.;
  • To deliver timely and beneficial projects and programs;
  • To provide effective preserve and manage our assets;
  • To efficiently operate the transportation system.

 

The Director of the Department of Transportation (“Director”) takes charge of and supervises the construction of any county highway and the expenditure of money thereon.  In case of great necessity or emergency, certified,  the Director may enter into contracts with the board of county commissioners providing for the use of state highway equipment and workers at the expense of the county involved for the repair, snow removal, and clearance of county roads[i].

To facilitate the economical operation of state-owned vehicles, the Department may provide to the state motor pool, or to any other state agency to which a state-owned vehicle is assigned, gasoline, service, or minor repairs on a direct cost-plus-service-charge basis[ii].  The NDOT  is also notable for its aggressively proactive approach to highway maintenance.
