Idaho Department of Transportation

In Idaho, the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) is an executive department of the state government[i].  The ITD provides all modes of state wide transportation to move interstate commerce, out-of-state visitors, and Idaho’s population.

Idaho’s transportation system is the backbone of the state’s economy.  Safe and efficient roads, bridges, airports, railroads, and ports promote the expansion of Idaho’s economy.

In Idaho, the Idaho Transportation Board is a citizen group appointed to serve Idahoans.  The Board addresses the state’s transportation needs and represents the interests and needs of the traveling public.  The Idaho Board establishes state transportation policy and guides the planning, development, and management of a transportation network that is safe, efficient, and enhances Idaho’s economy and quality of life.

The ITD’s main concern is the maintenance of state highways.  All state highways are maintained by the department at state expense[ii].

The ITD includes an office of the director.  The executive head of the office is the director having knowledge and experience in transportation matters.  Additionally, an office of the chief engineer of the department is established and the chief engineer must be a registered professional engineer[iii].

Pursuant to Idaho Code § 40-508, an Idaho traffic safety commission was established within the department to implement safety measures in transportation.

Additionally, the Division of Transportation Planning was created to serve the citizens of the state.  This division helps to direct an intergovernmental statewide transportation planning process, including data collection and analysis.  It provides for the development and implementation of an efficient, integrated, multimodal transportation system.
