District of Columbia Department of Transportation

In the District of Columbia (District), the District of Columbia Department of Transportation (DDOT) manages and maintains publicly-owned transportation infrastructure.  DDOT through its committed services strives to achieve an exceptional quality of life in the nation’s capital through more sustainable travel practices, safer streets, and outstanding access to goods and services.

DDOT was created pursuant to D.C. Code 1975-1 under the direction and control of the mayor of the District.  The mission of DDOT is to “develop and maintain a cohesive sustainable transportation system that delivers safe, affordable, and convenient ways to move people and goods, while protecting and enhancing the natural, environmental, and cultural resources of the District.”  The head of DDOT is the director of department of transportation.  The functions of DDOT are:

  • to plan, design, construct, and maintain the District’s streets, alleys, sidewalks, bridges, traffic signals, and street lights;
  • to manage and make improvements to the street system to facilitate traffic flow through the District;
  • to manage, with the Department of Public Works, the removal of snow and ice from the streets; and
  • to coordinate the District’s mass transit services, including the reduced-fare program for students using MetroBus and MetroRail.

 

There is established within the DDOT, the Office of the Surveyor, headed by the surveyor.  The Office of the Surveyor shall operate under the administrative direction of the director and shall constitute an organizational unit of DDOT[i].  Within the Office of the Surveyor, the director can establish such organizational components, or such offices within any organizational division of DDOT, as s/he deems appropriate.
